After studying English and German philology, history,
philosophy and history of the arts at the University of Kassel (Germany) from
1990-1993, as well as information systems engineering at the University of
Wolverhampton (England) in 1993-1994, Guido Ipsen was awarded a Master of
Arts degree in Wolverhampton in 1995.
In the same year he became research assistant
at the department of languages, University of Kassel, lecturing and doing
research in Prof. Winfried Nöth’s semiotics division. He then started his PhD
thesis.
He finished his thesis on the semiotics of hybrid
structures in hypertext networks in 2001 (summa cum laude). The printed book
will appear in 2004, bearing the title HybridHyperSigns. An English
translation is under preparation.
Guido Ipsen is now working on a second book (the
German “Habilitation”). The project is a Historical Semiotics of the Media.
The aim is to reveal a semiotic theory of sign evolution in media history that
focuses on the evolutionary force within sign systems, their usage in culture
respectively, rather than technological innovation of medial devices. Part of
this was a research project at the University of Kassel on the history of
reception of medial change.
He continued to work in the Kassel team of
semioticians around W. Nöth as an assistant professor until 2003. During
that time, he also administered a research project on constitutionalism at the
University of Kassel in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Horst Dippel.
Since August 2004, Guido Ipsen has been working as a
Professor for Scientific Communication and Media Semiotics at the
University of Dortmund, Germany. He hosts the faculty’s Forum for Cultural
Studies, works as an advisor for scientific journals, and coordinates various
projects on an international scale.
Guido Ipsen focuses on lecturing
transdisciplinary subjects with semiotic and historical background. He also
wrote an online introduction to linguistics and several papers and articles on
semiotic and linguistic issues. |
